The Ponds Conservancy Co-Hosts First YMCA Youth Triathlon
Nearly 200 kids participated in the first ever “Y-Tri at The Ponds” on a Saturday in August. With the starting line packed by 7:30 AM, parents and friends cheered their favorites through 8 laps in the pool, a 5 mile bike ride and a final one mile run.
The finishers all received medals and were congratulated by many family members, YMCA staff, and volunteers. The children beamed with pride as they realized what they had accomplished. YMCA at The Ponds Health and Wellness Director, Robbie Smith, was thrilled with the community’s response to the event. “Each parent and family member that I spoke to about the triathlon thought that it was an amazing success. They were so proud of their children. Not many children can say ‘I finished a triathlon!’
The Ponds Conservancy, a not-for-profit community organization, has been created to enhance the quality of life and sense of community at The Ponds through educational programs, social events, cultural endeavors and environmental stewardship. However, the function of The Conservancy goes beyond protecting nature and the beauty of the land at The Ponds. Its overriding purpose is to become a thriving resource for community activity and spirit. The Y-Tri is an example of that spirit.
